Sinterklaas in Japan

Working in Japan also means explaining about Dutch culture. One of the Dutch traditions is Sinterklaas. We sent an invitation to our colleagues, in which we explain who Sinterklaas is and that he might visit us in Japan.

We stapled photos and drawings of Sinterklaas and zwarte piet to ribbons, and decorated the living room and hall with this. We were lucky that colleagues from Veldhoven were visiting the office. They brought 5 kg of special Sinterklaas candy and wrapping paper. A few visits to the 100 yen shop took care of presents for everybody. Finally we downloaded some Sinterklaas songs and we were ready, let the party begin.

Our Japanese colleagues were the first to arrive. This was very convenient, so we could explain a bit more about Sinterklaas. When everybody had arrived, it was really a full house, somebody banged on the front door. The kids ran to the door, but unfortunately……..Sinterklaas was not there. But they did find a basked with presents. In no time everybody had unwrapped their presents.

Our Japanese colleagues also enjoyed the Sinterklaas party, they already told us they would like to get invited next year as well.
